The city of tradition and hot spring resorts, Ishikawa Prefecture, Kaga City
Kaga City is located in the southwestern part of Ishikawa
Prefecture, adjacent to Fukui Prefecture, with a population
of about 62,000. It is a place where the aesthetic sense
reminiscent of the culture of Kaga Hyakumangoku has
blossomed. The city encompasses six areas enriched
with tourist resources: Daishoji, where the Daishoji
Domain was established; the three hot springs known as
Kaga Onsenkyo—Yamashiro, Yamanaka, and Katayamazu;
Facing the Sea of Japan, the city also includes areas like
"Hashitate," once renowned as the wealthiest village in
apan and a hub for northern-bound ship owners.Overall,
Kaga City is blessed with abundant tourism resources,
characterized by its rich cultural heritage and scenic landscapes.

From a City of Potential Extinction to a City of Potential for Challenge"
On the other hand, following a peak population of about
80,000 in 1985 (Showa 60), Kaga City has been
experiencing a decline in population. In 2014 (Heisei 26),
it was identified as a city with a potential for extinction by
the Japan Policy Council. Efforts are being made to move
away from being a "city with the possibility of extinction"
and to transform into a "city with the potential for challenges."
>>> story 03
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the opening of the
Hokuriku Shinkansen, and the occurrence of the Noto
Peninsula Earthquake in Reiwa 6 (2024).
However, amidst growing expectations, Ishikawa Prefecture was struck by an
earthquake disaster, leading Kaga City to face a new crisis.
During this challenging period, it was decided that the Hokuriku Shinkansen would be
extended to Kaga Onsen Station and commence operations in March of Reiwa 6
(2024), beginning to shine a light of hope for the residents of the area, including those
in Kaga City.
Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kaga City's tourism industry suffered a
significant blow, with once-bustling hot spring towns and tourist spots experiencing a
decrease in visitors. This resulted in a severe impact on the local economy.
